Mathematical Modeling in PreK

While not formally assessed, even in PreK, students should have the opportunity to engage in the early stages of mathematical modeling by making sense of contextual situations, identifying quantities, and using tools, drawings, and numbers to represent and solve problems. Developing modeling skills nurtures flexible thinking and helps students see mathematics as a meaningful way to describe and explore their world. Through intentional opportunities, young learners can begin to build the foundation for modeling as a powerful mathematical practice.
