1.3 Proper Preparation and Storage of Infant Formula

To keep infants safe, proper preparation of infant formula is important. It begins with parents providing either prepared bottles or formula in its original container.

If you are preparing formula from the original container, be sure to carefully follow instructions on the formula packaging. Preparation steps are as follows:

1. Clean and sanitize the workspace used to prepare the formula.
2. Wash your hands well before preparing bottles or feeding an infant.
3. Use clean and sanitized bottles.
4. Prepare formula carefully according to package instructions.
  - Use water from a safe approved source or water provided by the parent or guardian.
  - Use the correct quantity of water according to the manufacturer's label instructions.**
  - Add the recommended quantity of formula powder to the water.
5. Serve prepared infant formula at room temperature or warmed.

- - Warm a bottle in a bowl of warm water or under warm running water.
  - Avoid getting water into the bottle or on the nipple.
  - Test the temperature with a few drops on your wrist. Formula should be warm, not hot.

IMPORTANT NOTES****

Too little water added to infant formula may cause the infant's kidneys and digestive system to work too hard and may cause dehydration.

Too much water dilutes the nutrition an infant needs for healthy growth and development.

Use or store prepared infant formula immediately to avoid spoilage.
