Maintaining and Using All Approved Exits

To ensure exits remain safe and usable at all times, programs should:

Regularly inspect exits to confirm doors open smoothly and routes remain accessible
Maintain outdoor exit areas so they are safe to use in all conditions (e.g., remove snow or ice)
Keep pathways free of furniture, equipment, or other potential obstructions
Routinely check that exit signage and lighting are functioning properly

In an emergency situation, adults and children must be able to exit quickly with a clear path and a clear understanding of where to go. Having to take time to clear access to an exit can prevent children and adults from reaching safety in a timely manner.
